Critical Care Waiting Area + Chapel

Baptist Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi

The traditional institutional waiting area was reimagined from a hospitality perspective in this project.  The large waiting area serves the long-term patient’s friends and family members, focused on the visitor’s experience by paying special attention to social versus private spaces, arrival/check-in, family landing zones, as well as options for distraction. The waiting area included private and communal workstations, hideaway booths, activity tables, family spaces, a public use kitchen and café, phone booths, sleeping couches, lounge & structured seating, as well as private shower rooms and lockers.  Integration of RISD badge technology was crucial to reinterpreting the waiting room experience.  Everyone in the hospital will wear real time location badges which means visitors no longer stand in line at a big desk to check-in.  Instead, they find a spot to relax and someone personally greets them at their seat.  The project was multi-phased to accommodate the displaced services while the renovation occurred.
